SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING
Note: This information pertains, for the most part, to students in the Electrical, Computer and Software Engineering programs.
Students with a strong interest in an outside area are encouraged to complete a minor. Students successfully completing a minor may be allowed to increase the number of "non technical" technical elective credits, while simultanously reducing the number of "technical" technical elective credits in order to facilitate obtaining a minor. The specific arrangements vary by minor and are listed below. The Entrance to Minor Application is posted online and need to be completed and signed prior to the semester in which you intend to graduate. Any questions should be directed to Dr. Coulston prior to taking classes in order to prevent any misunderstanding in the requirements.
- Students pursuing a Computer Engineering minor may count all 9 credits towards their technical elective requirement. Thus, students completing this minor will not have to take any additional technical electives.
- Students pursuing a Technical Sales Minor may apply 9-credits from the minor to count towards their technical elective requirement. Thus, students completing this minor will not have to take any additional technical electives. Students must successfully complete the minor in order for this exception to apply.
- Students pursuing a Operations & Supply Chain Management Minor may apply 9-credits from the minor to count towards their technical elective requirement. Thus, students completing this minor will not have to take any additional technical electives. Students must successfully complete the minor in order for this exception to apply.
- Students pursuing a MIS minor may count MIS 430 and one other 400 level MIS class towards their technical elective requirement. Thus, students completing an MIS minor must still take one "technical" technical elective course. Students must successfully complete the minor in order for this exception to apply.
- Students pursuing a Physics minor may apply 6-credits from their advanced physics course work requried for the minor towards their technical elective requirement. Thus, students completing a Physics minor must still take one "technical" technical elective courses. Note, PHYS 400 - Intermediate Electricity and Magnetism I and PHYS 403 - Electronics for Scientists, will not be accepted as technical elective choices and should not be taken by ECSE students. Students must successfully complete the minor in order for this exception to apply.
- Students pursuing a Math minor may may apply 6-credits from their advanced course work requried for the minor towards their technical elective requirement. Thus, students completing a Math minor must still take one "technical" technical elective courses. Students must successfully complete the minor in order for this exception to apply.
- Students pursuing a Computer Science minor may apply 3-credits from their advanced course work requried for the minor towards their technical elective requirement. Thus, students completing a Computer Science minor must still take two "technical" technical elective courses. Students must successfully complete the minor in order for this exception to apply.
- Students pursuing a Psychology minor need to complete 18-credits of psychology courses. Nine of these credits should be selected so that they satisfy the Social Science general education (denoted with a "GS" designation) requirement. Students completing an Psychology minor will have 2 of their technical elective credits satisfied by PSYCH 444 and PSYCH 244. Thus, students completing a Psychology minor must still take one "technical" technical elective courses. The final psychology class may be selected from any of the 300 or 400 level psychology classes offered in the Penn State system. Students pursuing this option should take the following courses:
- PSYCH 100 - Introductory Psychology (GS)
- PSYCH 244 - Introduction to the Psychology of Human Factors Engineering (GS)
- PSYCH 253 - Introduction to Psychology of Perception (GS)
- PSYCH 444 - Engineering Psychology (Technical Elective)
- Two other 300 or 400 level psychology class.
Students must successfully complete the minor in order for this exception to apply.
- Students pursuing a Economics minor need to complete 18-credits of economics courses. Nine of these credits should be selected so that they satisfy the Social Science general education (denoted with a "GS" designation) requirement. Students completing an Economoics minor will have 2 courses, ECON 481 and ECON 485, counted towards their technical elective requirement. Thus, students completing a Economics minor must still take one "technical" technical elective courses. The final economics class may be selected from any of the 300 or 400 level economics classes offered in the Penn State system. Students pursuing this option should take the following courses:
- ECON 002 - Introductory Microeconomic Analysis and Policy (GS)
- ECON 004 - Introductory Macroeconomic Analysis and Policy (GS)
- ECON 302 - Itermediate Microeconomics (GS)
- ECON 481 - Business Forecasting Techniques (Technical Elective)
- ECON 485 - Econometric Techniques (Technical Elective)
- Any other 300 or 400 level economics class.
