The Career Development Center can provide guidance.Course Outline This course provides practical off-campus experience in biology under the supervision of a professional and a faculty member. A special project is to be developed prior to internship and must be reviewed and approved by a member of the biology faculty. Instructional Objectives The objective of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to work with a professional biologist (preceptor). Student performance will be evaluated by a student log book of experiences, a paper related to an aspect of internship, and preceptor input. General Guidelines to be followed include: A. Student should spend a minimum of 45 hours per credit earned, usually 3 hours per week for a semester of 15 weeks. Therefore, the total number of credits a student takes will depend upon the hours spent on the internship. B. Student must write a paper related to an aspect of the internship in standard form (following form suggested by MLA). This should be over and above the minimum hours stated in number one above. The topic for the paper can be one of preceptor's choosing. C. This must be a learning experience for the student, so wherever possible the student should be challenged to gather background information regarding procedures, etc. 1. Do not use footnotes. Cite references in the sentence. 2. A copy of the paper will be kept by the preceptor and one copy should be turned into the supervising Biology faculty member. 3. Paper must be typed. D. Student must keep a log of his/her activities. To be turned in with the paper. E. The preceptor shall provide a summary of the experience to the supervising Biology faculty member, along with input regarding the student's grade. |
