SCHOOL OF SCIENCE Education Pre-Certification Option in Mathematics General Requirements The Education Pre-Certification Option is designed for students interested in pursuing further studies with an emphasis on education, or plan to enter a teacher certification program after graduation. To obtain a bachelor's degree in mathematics, students must complete 120 credits. In addition to the University's General Education Requirements, Math majors in any option must take two courses in computer science, two courses in statistics, and several upper-level courses in mathematics. In this way, students are sure to complete a well-rounded core curriculum. Upper-level courses are then tailored to match each student's selected option. Supporting and elective credits (up to 21) are available and can be used to earn a minor in another discipline. Supervised research projects or internships may also be scheduled as supporting or elective credits. Typical Course Schedules Note: Most courses in the first four semesters of study are common to all five options.
In the senior year, students are encouraged to take and pass the following sections of the National Teacher Examination (PRAXIS): Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST)-Reading, Writing, and Listening (current equivalents of the former Communication Skills); PPST Math (current equivalent of the former General Knowledge); and the specialty area:Mathematics: Content Knowledge. |
