In 2001 the college opened the Junker Center, a $10.2 million athletics and recreation center, providing Behrend and the Erie community with an outstanding multi-purpose facility.

For a detailed look at the Junker Center, view our photo page.

The 72,800-square-foot site features three all-purpose courts and a gymnasium seating 1,600, an eight-lane swimming pool, weight room, three-lane running track, jumping pits, aerobics room, locker rooms, offices, and a variety of exercise equipment.

In addition to serving recreational needs, the Junker Center provides a new venue for major events. In recent months, it has been the site of commencement, the Behrend Medallion Scholarship Dinner, a concert by pop star Shaggy, and a musical production by the college's Matchbox Players.

The Junker Center replaces Erie Hall as the principal indoor athletic facility on campus. Erie Hall has been renovated to accommodate offices, but the first-floor gym remains open and is used for intramurals.

The center is named in honor of the Junker family for their long-standing commitment and generosity to Penn State, and especially their support of Behrend's athletics program.
