Behrend Softball Defeats Grove City in Home Opener

The Penn State Behrend softball team played its first home game of the season on Thursday, March 27 when they took on the Grove City Wolverines.  The women played a double header in which they defeated the Wolverines 8-5 in game one and went on to win game two 12-4.

In the first game the women took the lead in the early innnings when Kelly Houghton (Jamestown/Jamestown) led the blue and white hitting two of three at bats and added 2 RBIs.  Nikki Kaschauer (South Park/South Park) was able to go two for three as well, adding one RBI for the Behrend Lions efforts.  Julie Koman (McKees Rocks/Montour) received the win for the ladies, striking out five Wolverines over the six innings.  Grove City tried to rally in the bottom of the fifth, but the Behrend Lions held them off for a 8-5 victory in the first game.

The second game of the double header was more blue and white domination.  With the bases loaded early in the first inning, Katie Whitby (Tyrone/Tyrone) stepped up and hit a deep shot to center field, bringing in all three runners.  An outfield error would bring Whitby in as well, as the blue and white went up 4-1 early on in the game. Kelsey Mulhollem (Altoona/Altoona) had an excellent second game, hitting four of four with six RBIs.  The women would keep their lead and defeat the Wolverines 12-4 in game two.  The women now post a 10-2 record so far in the 2008 season.

The Behrend Lions will next travel to Washington & Jefferson on Monday, March 31 with play begining at 3:00 p.m.  The women will then open up AMCC Conference play on Tuesday, April first when the travel to Pitt-Bradford.  The double header is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
