Darren Williams, associate professor of physics and astronomy, submitted the proposal “Dynamical Stability of Massive Satellite Systems” to the Institute for Astronomy at University of Hawaii as an NSF grant subcontract. The three-year grant requests $129,683.
Ralph Ford, director of the School of Engineering, has been elected to serve on the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Regional Activities Board Nominations and Appointments Committee. This committee manages the nominations process and identifies qualified candidates for the Regional Activities Board and its committees. The appointment is for 2007-2008.
Robert Roecklein, lecturer in English, gave the presentation “Socrates’ Theory of Forms: Plato Versus Xenaphon” in early November at the Northeast Political Science Association’s 38th annual meeting held in Boston.
The college will receive up to $169,000 from the University Committee on Instructional Facilities to convert 21 Witkowski to a technology classroom for physics. This grant, given through SCALE UP (Student-Centered Activities for Large Enrollment Undergraduate Programs), was pursued by School of Science faculty and staff, including Bill Baxter, Jonathan Hall, and Jerry McGraw.
Joseph Previte, associate professor of mathematics, and Michelle Previte, assistant professor of mathematics, have submitted the proposal “RUI Program in Vertex Replacement Rules” to the National Science Foundation to request $284,542 over three years.
“No Eastern and Central European Left Behind: A Cross Country Regression for Fertility, Human Capital, and Market Economy” a paper written by Valerica Vlad,
assistant professor of economics, and Mustafa Seref Akin of the management department at Ataturk Alatoo University in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, has been accepted for publication by Journal of International Development. In October, Val presented the paper “The Coexistence of ‘Process’ and ‘End-of-Pipe’ Environmental R&Ds: Welfare and Emission Effects of Two R&D Subsidies” at the 43rd annual meeting of the Missouri Valley Economic Association held in Minneapolis.
