Dr. Jay Amicangelo, assistant professor of chemistry, Dr. Mary Chisholm, associate professor of chemistry, Dr. Alan Jircitano, associate professor chemistry, and Dr. Martin Kociolek, assistant professor of chemistry, attended the 225th National ACS meeting in New Orleans in March. Dr. Kociolek presented a paper titled "Stereo Selective Cycloadditions of Chiral Homoallylic Alcohols."

Dr. Syed Saad Andaleeb, professor of marketing, has had a paper accepted for publication by the Journal of the South Asian Studies Association of Australia. The paper, titled "Political Leadership and Legitimacy Among the Urban Elite in Bangladesh," was co-authored by Dr. Zachary Irwin, associate professor of political science.

Dr. Margaret Voss, assistant professor of biology, attended the Wilson Ornithological Society and Association of Field Ornithology at Ohio Wesleyan to present a paper titled "Changes in Maternal Time Allocation over the Course of Incubation."

Dr. Jeffrey Pinto, Samuel A. and Elizabeth B. Breene professor of management, has been named to a three-year appointment on the College of Reviewers for the Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. He will evaluate candidates for the Canada Research Chairs Program.

Dr. Clare Porac, professor of psychology, gave a talk titled "Elimination vs. Modification as Explanations for Age-related Reductions in the Prevalence of Left-handedness" at the University of Texas at El Paso in March.

Dr. Brian O'Leary, lecturer of integrative arts, presented "Modality in Sandrich's 'Shall We Dance': A Linguistic Interpretation" at the National Association for Humanities Education Conference in San Antonio, Texas, in March.

Dr. Teresa Caruso, lecturer in English, Dr. Sean Dougherty, lecturer in English, George Looney, assistant professor of English, and Dr. Gregory Morris, professor of American literature, led a contingent of nine students to the Pennsylvania College English Association conference in Pittsburgh March 13-15. Those students presented their critical and creative work at the conference, and two of those students-Michael McEwan and Tracie Morell-won the awards given by the association for best undergraduate creative writing presented at the conference.

George Dudas and Ron McCarty, instructors in computer science, attended an information technology conference at Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh on February 21. The conference was sponsored by the information technology division of Prentice-Hall, Inc.

Catherine Hanhauser, assistant to the Dean, has been named to the Erie Insight Advisory Board. Erie Insight, a part of the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership, was created to help area businesses with their efforts to attract professionals to key positions and integrate them and their families into the communities.

Dr. Roger F. Knacke, director of the School of Science, is co-author of the paper, "Mid-infrared Imaging of the First-ascent Giant HD 233517," which appears in the March 20 issue of The Astrophysical Journal. His co-authors are R. Scott Fisher, C.M. Telesco, and Robert Pina.

Dr. Jeffrey A. Pinto, the Samuel A. and Elizabeth B. Breene Professor of management, has been named to the editorial review board of the South African Journal of Industrial Engineering.

Dr. Clare Porac, professor of psychology, was recently elected to a three-year term on the Duquesne University Alumni Board of Governors and over spring break attended her first meeting of the group. She will serve as liaison to more than 300 Duquesne alumni in the Erie area.

Dr. Tom Spudich, assistant professor of chemistry, attended an Analytical Digital Library meeting and conference March 8-13 in Orlando, Florida.

Dr. Gary Viebranz, lecturer in music and director of instrumental ensembles, attended the Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Band Festival February 28-March 2 at Mansfield University in Mansfield, Pennsylvania. Three Penn State Behrend students, Emily Allen, Becky Corbin, and Devin Scully, performed with the Intercollegiate Band.

Dr. Bill Baxter, associate professor of physics, and Dr. Blair Tuttle, assistant professor of physics, attended the general meeting of the American Physical Society in Austin, Texas March 1-6. While there Baxter gave a talk on "Evidence of Molecular Chaos for a Granular Gas Driven by a Mechanically Fluidized Bed," and Tuttle made two presentations: Prediction of Dopant Ionization Energies in Silicon:the Importance of Strain; and Pseudopotential Calculations of Heterojunctions between Silicon and its Oxides.

Dr. Diane Parente, assistant professor of management, has been named to the Innovative Education Committee of the National Decision Sciences Institute for the 2003-2005 term. This committee serves as a resource and clearinghouse of information concerning new and innovative curricular and teaching approaches. It also plays an active role in the dissemination of new ideas with respect to curricula and teaching methods designed to enhance the effectiveness of learning in the decision sciences. Parente is also on the editorial board for the Decision Sciences' Journal of Innovative Education. She previously served the Institute as a member of the national Nominating Committee from 1996-98.

Dr. Margaret Voss and Dr. David Hunnicutt, assistant professors of biology, attended the Council on Undergraduate Research Dialogues 2003, held in Fairfax, Virginia. While there she attended a grantsmanship seminar and met with a National Science Foundation program director.
